Privacy policy
The short version: Dear Delusion has no accounts, no sign-up, no ads, no analytics and no tracking cookies. Your settings, favourites and streak stay on your device. If you switch on notifications, we store the technical details your browser gives us to send them, plus your notification settings, and we delete them when you switch notifications off.
Who we are
Dear Delusion is made by Mata Aesthetica Pty Ltd (ABN 27 671 657 659), based in Victoria, Australia ("we", "us"). This policy covers the Dear Delusion web app at app.deardelusion.app and this website at deardelusion.app. Questions or requests go to hello@deardelusion.app.
What stays on your device
The app saves a few things in your browser's local storage so it remembers you between visits. This never leaves your device, and we can't see it:
- your notification settings (how many a day, from and until what time, your timezone, and whether spicy mode is on)
- the reads you've saved as favourites
- your delusion streak (how many days in a row you've opened the app, and the last date you did)
- when you last dismissed the "add to Home Screen" tip, so we don't nag you for a week
The app also keeps an offline copy of its own files (pages, fonts and icons) so it opens without a connection. When you share a read, the share card image is made on your device and goes wherever you send it through your phone's share menu. We don't receive it.
You can clear all of this at any time by clearing the site's data in your browser settings, or by deleting the app from your Home Screen.
What we store if you turn on notifications
Notifications are optional and off until you switch them on. When you do, your browser creates a "push subscription" and the app sends it to us with your settings. We store:

This doesn't include your name, email or phone number. Your timezone is the only hint of where you are. Each record is labelled with a scrambled code (a one-way hash) made from the subscription address, not with anything about you. The records are stored with our host, Netlify (Netlify Blobs), on servers that may be outside Australia, including in the United States.
To actually deliver a notification, we send the read, encrypted, to your browser's push service. That's run by your browser or phone maker, for example Apple, Google or Mozilla, and their own privacy policies apply to it.
How long we keep it
- Switch notifications off in the app and we delete your record straight away.
- If the push service tells us a subscription has expired (for example because you deleted the app or cleared its data), we delete the record automatically the next time we try to send to it.
- You can also email us and we'll help you get it removed.
Hosting and server logs
The app is hosted by Netlify, and this website may be hosted by Netlify or Cloudflare. Like any website, their servers process technical information such as your IP address, browser type and the pages requested, to deliver the site, keep it secure and stop abuse. We don't use these logs to build a profile of you. Our fonts are hosted with the site, so loading a page doesn't contact Google Fonts or other third parties.
What we don't do
- No accounts, passwords or sign-up
- No advertising, and no ad or tracking cookies
- No analytics or tracking scripts in the app or on this site
- We don't sell or rent your information, or share it for marketing
Children
Dear Delusion contains swearing and adult humour and is meant for people aged 16 and over. We don't knowingly collect information from children.
Your rights
We handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles. You can ask what we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, or make a complaint, by emailing hello@deardelusion.app. Because we don't hold names or emails, we may need you to tell us roughly when you turned notifications on so we can help. If you're not happy with our response, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au. If you live outside Australia, you may have extra rights under your local law, and we'll respect them.
Changes
If we add features that change what we collect, such as accounts, purchases or app-store versions, we'll update this policy and the date at the top before those features go live.
